Sod Project and Course Update

There is a lot going on and we are scrambling to get as much as possible done before winter arrives.  I sent the green committee the following update yesterday via email, but it's all good info for anyone that's interested...

  1. We are obviously very busy with leaves now.   Blowing, mulching, vacuuming, etc… are daily assignments.  It will be ongoing until at least Christmas.
  2. Several high traffic areas will be prepped this week for a delivery of sod next Tuesday.  We’ll shoot for a full truckload of 18 pallets.  That sounds like a lot but will only address a few of the neediest areas. We need to do this now while we still have irrigation up and running.
  3. We are down to one irrigation motor as the oldest of the two main motors is not working.  This just happened yesterday, and we are expecting a visit to confirm this week.  Ideally, we can get this dead motor replaced asap so we are not limping to start out 2025.   This motor has lasted two years longer than any previous motor has lasted so we had this in our capital budget.
  4. We applied the first of at least 2 poa cure applications to greens 1-7.  We will make another application next Friday, November 22.  If temps stay up, we will make 3rd application on or shortly after December 6.
  5. Seed is finally coming up on some tees that were in rough shape.  We’ll keep pushing the new turf to mature so we can get back to using those tees in the winter.
  6. Zoysia patch on 1 fairway is out of control despite a preventive application prior to Helene and then 2 follow up curative applications since then.  We may make one more application to try and hold the disease in place, but the symptoms will last well into next summer.  We will make applications to all the zoysia again next spring.  Drainage is the issue and Helene kept 1 fairway saturated for the better part of 3 weeks.  Mild temps and wet soil are perfect for zoysia patch.
  7. We would like to squeeze in a deep tine aeration on greens before things get too cold.  Once we’ve done the sod project this will be first on the to do list.
  8. We have an awesome team right now and are trying to hold on to them through the winter, so we don’t have to start over next spring.  Hours may be trimmed soon, but for now we have more than enough work for all of them.
  9. The warm weather has extended the season of need for greens and tee applications.  Sprayable fertilizers and disease applications typically stop in early October.  It looks like we’ll be going well into December this year.
Here are some pictures from the past few days as we prep for a sod delivery next week...

The back tee complex on 18 is a mess in need of drainage and re-grassing

The process of improving this area started Tuesday morning

The tees actually look a lot better surrounded with dirt.  Note the left side...
it gets zero sun this time of year.  Dark from sunrise to sunset.

Drainage is going in before sod arrives

We will finish the prep work Wednesday.  Sod won't arrive until next Tuesday,
but we have other areas to prep before that time.
