Transition Time
Shorter days, cooler temperatures, and a 26 day dry spell are taking a toll on the color of the zoysia. It's quickly going dormant for the winter. The forecast shows that we'll likely be 36 days with no rain 10 days from now. Seed planted just after the wet spell is popping up in some places, but not nearly as well as needed. Irrigation is the sole provider of water right now and it is very poor as a rain substitute. The front nine is currently cart path only to try and give some of the newly planted seed a fighting chance. However, the dry conditions are also justification for keeping carts off the turf. Zoysia needs to go into dormancy in a healthy and happy state or it will not wake up in good condition next spring. It is currently limping to the finish line. We look at the big picture and think long term when making these kind of decisions. Today's convenience vs. next year's course conditions is the dilemma. It's next year's conditions that we are focused on right now and Mother Nature is not helping much. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation very much.
