Hole 8 Renovation Work

Expanding on the recent update about hole 8:

Monday we will begin making long overdue improvements to this hole.  All the tee boxes and a bunker on the right of the green will be addressed.  We will be using the help of GreenCor (Jason Flowers and Brian Vincel) for most of the work.  Our staff will be doing some prep work along with the sod install when the bunker is removed.

Why are we doing this?

The white tee is very undersized for the volume of play it receives and thousands of divots filled over 30 years means there is now a distinct crown in the middle of the tee.  In order to enlarge this tee we will need to lower it some.  Rough grading will combine the white and yellow tee boxes into one tee box.  The blue and gray tee boxes will also be combined into one tee to improve the amount of useable teeing area for each. The spare tee under the trees on the right will be removed, but we hope to somehow incorporate an alternate area for white tees to be located.  This is a fluid process once we start moving earth around.  Once rough grading has occurred we will add the growing medium (80/20 mix of sand and compost) and then laser level the tee boxes.  Irrigation will be installed and then sod will be put down.  Since it is a par 3 that will receive a lot of divots, we will use bentgrass for tees.   The slopes will be fescue.

The bunker on the front right has a long history of bad behavior and we've documented this many times.  This bunker will be removed along with the mound above it.  The right side of the green will be sodded in zoysia and ultimately mowed at fairway height.  The farm where we were fortunate enough to find meyer zoysia (what we have) maintains it at about 1.5" so it'll need to be mowed down to .5" once it takes root in warmer weather.  It could be a few months before this part of the project is truly "finished" since warm weather is needed for zoysia to grow.   Regardless, it will look and play much better when all this work is completed.

We hope to be completed with this work in 3 weeks.  While the hole is closed you will still be able to pass through to get from hole 7 to 9.  Once we are done with the work and can re-open, we will be using mats on the tee boxes until the sod is established.

Thanks for allowing us the resources to make these improvements and thanks for your patience while we do the work.  I think everyone will be impressed with the finished product.
