We are finally starting to overcome the massive leaf problem that plagues us every fall. We've been able to hold on to a few more staff this year so that has been a big help. Mulching leaves in the wooded areas and sucking them up everywhere else has been a slow and noisy process, but we are close to the finish line.
Some frigid mornings and a few rains prevented us from using our deep tine aerator on greens as we had planned. However, we were able to use our small aerator to open up the putting surfaces with small solid holes which is better than nothing. Greens are going through regular mood swings now that winter weather is here. It's impossible for us to provide consistent smoothness with freezing/thawing cycles and occasional lengthy frost delays. We just try to get them smoothed out when it's safe to do so. They rolled very well today despite the small aeration holes.

Ryan and I attended the annual VGCSA conference a couple of weeks ago at Farmington CC in Charlottesville. I got to say hello to Drew and Michael on my visit so it was good to see our former teammates. Very useful research was presented from NC State and Virginia Tech. The USGA Green Section staff provided a lot of new information from their numerous course visits and ongoing research. In addition to two days of learning, I was humbled to receive the Environmental Stewardship Award. This was not expected and I'm sure others were more deserving, but it was nice to be recognized. It says a lot about Fawn Lake, our team, and membership that we were considered worthy of this.

Upon further review we need a new pump too. We will probably start off 2025 with only 50% of our pump station functioning. |
