Irrigation Work
For the next several days we will be using GPS equipment to locate all irrigation components on the golf course. You've likely noticed the wire marking flags throughout the course. Those were placed to help us find the many points that need to be mapped with GPS. Sprinkler heads, valves, wire splices, drainage inlets, and a few other important points will be placed into a map that will aid us in many ways going forward. This GPS work will require that we keep the hole we are working on closed. Please be alert to the "hole closed" sign you may encounter while playing.
Side Note:
Our nearly 30 year old irrigation system is showing it's age more and more as the years go by. The time allocated to making repairs grows each year. This component of the course is out of sight, but not out of mind (at least not to us). There are over 1000 heads throughout the course and they are all wired to a "satellite" or controller located on each hole. These controllers are full of wires, circuit boards, radio receivers, and other fun stuff that communicate back and forth between the heads and the central control computer located in our office. Wires get old and brittle, plastic parts wear out, pipes start to fail, valves stick, and many other age related issues add up with time. Everyone sees what's on top of the ground, but I think it's a good idea to mention the things that are not so obvious. Nothing that you see above ground happens without the stuff you don't see below ground.
